Before 2007, the Ministry of Energy was the Department of State for Energy under the then Ministry of Trade, Industry and Employment. It was not until 2007 when the Ministry of Energy was established, and the nomenclature changed from a Department to a Ministry. Then in 2016, the Energy and Petroleum Ministries were merged as one Ministry named the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy.

Under the energy sector, the Ministry is responsible for the formulation and monitoring of the implementation of the sector’s policies. It is also mandated to manage national Energy Resources; sustainable electricity supply & distribution; conduct domestic and clean cooking energy projects and programs; implement and monitor renewable energy and energy efficiency projects and programmes in The Gambia.

To ensure the provision of adequate, reliable and affordable supplies of energy to Gambian households in a sustainable way to assist poverty reduction and economic development.
